Is OEM Manufacturing the Right Fit for Your Project?

OEM manufacturing starts with the product requirements you bring to the project. You may already have technical drawings, a defined specification or a product concept approved by your team. The next step is to establish how that design can be manufactured and which details still need confirmation.

This service is relevant when you have:

  • An existing product design:

Drawings or models that define the intended shape, dimensions and construction.

  • A technical specification:

Requirements for materials, hardness, colors, artwork, components or packaging.

  • An approved concept:

A clear product direction that still needs manufacturing details resolved before tooling.

An approved concept may still leave questions about structure, color construction or assembly. Those questions can be addressed during manufacturing review.

If your starting point is an idea or reference that needs product design and modeling support, ODM product development may be the more suitable service.

Define Your Requirements Before Tooling

A drawing communicates the intended product, but some manufacturing decisions need information beyond its outline. Color boundaries, artwork placement, component fit and packaging requirements can all influence how the project is prepared.

Haotian can review the proposed design and evaluate structural or process changes before tooling. The aim is to identify unresolved requirements while changes can still be considered.

Requirement AreaWhat You DefineWhat Needs Review
Shape & Dimensions Product drawings, overall dimensions, thicknesses and important structural details. How the proposed geometry relates to the manufacturing process and whether changes should be considered.
Material & Hardness Your specified material and hardness requirements, where already defined. The requirements that still need clarification against the product’s intended use and construction.
Colors & Artwork Color areas, logos, graphics, relief details and artwork positions. Which features can be formed during molding and which may require decoration or transferred artwork.
Component Interfaces The parts the product must fit, retain, cover or connect with. Matching geometry, retention, coverage and the tooling or assembly requirements involved.
Packaging & Presentation Individual packing, grouped products, branded presentation and any assembly needed before packing. How the finished product and agreed components relate to the proposed packaging arrangement.

Silicone, PVC and rubber projects are assessed against their own requirements. A material or process used for one design should not automatically become the specification for another.

Where a change is proposed, its effect on the customer’s intended design should be discussed before the tooling direction is confirmed.

Tooling Development & Sample Review

Tooling development connects the reviewed design with the samples used to evaluate the product. Haotian’s own mold workshop supports production mold making, modifications and maintenance, allowing tooling requirements to be coordinated with the team supporting manufacturing.

Production Tooling

The tooling discussion should follow the agreed product structure and manufacturing approach. Features such as separate color areas, molded details or component interfaces need to be considered within that discussion.

Continued Tooling Support

Our mold workshop also supports modifications and maintenance for continued production and repeat orders. A returning project may need further review if the product design, components or specifications have changed.

Sample Evaluation

Samples provide a physical reference for reviewing appearance, color placement, graphic detail and relevant fit or assembly requirements. The aspects being evaluated should be clear, particularly where the product must work with another component.

Feedback & Revisions

Sample feedback should identify the feature requiring attention and the expected change. Design, tooling or process adjustments can then be discussed against that requirement.

Our in-house mold making capability provides further detail on production-tool development and ongoing tooling support.

Production, Decoration & Assembly

Once the product requirements and sample direction are confirmed, the project needs a coordinated approach to molding, decoration, assembly and packaging. Each stage should reflect the same agreed product requirements.

Molding Around the Design

Haotian can evaluate integrated multi-color molding, dispensing molding, overmolding and film transfer against a product’s shape, distinct color areas and artwork requirements. The appropriate route depends on the proposed design and technical suitability.

A formed logo, a separate molded color area and a surface graphic may require different approaches. These features should be considered together when deciding how to manufacture the product.

Logos & Surface Graphics

Our confirmed decoration processes include screen printing, pad printing and laser engraving. Artwork placement, surface geometry and the selected material need to be considered when evaluating a method.

The printing and decoration page explains the options available for discussing logos and surface artwork.

Assembly & Packaging

A project may extend beyond the molded part to include combinations of parts, agreed components and customized packaging. These requirements should remain connected to the product specification so that fit, artwork and presentation are considered together.

Our assembly and packaging support helps coordinate these requirements within the same project, reducing the separate supplier handoffs involved.

Quality Requirements & Supplier Documentation

An OEM project needs a clear basis for deciding whether the resulting product meets the customer’s requirements. Supplier qualification also requires a separate review of the company documents relevant to procurement.

Define the Product Acceptance Requirements

The project specification should identify the characteristics that matter to acceptance. Depending on the design, these may include dimensions, appearance, color arrangement, artwork position or fit with agreed components.

Requirements that cannot be assessed through appearance alone should be identified separately. Intended use, operating conditions and target-market requirements help define what additional documentation or validation needs to be discussed.

Our quality control page provides further information on project quality requirements and the checks relevant to the agreed scope.

Review the Management-System Documents

Haotian’s ISO 9001:2015 quality management and ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certificates cover the production of silicone craft products.

These documents provide a defined reference for reviewing the factory’s management systems. They do not establish certification or suitability of every silicone, PVC or rubber product.

Procurement teams can review the available management-system certificates alongside the documentation required for their specific project.

Preparing Your OEM Project Brief

A useful project brief identifies what is already decided and what still needs discussion. Include the latest available information and clearly mark any open questions.

  1. Design files or references: Drawings, 3D models, reference samples or images, with the relevant revision identified.

  2. Product specification: Dimensions, structural requirements and any material or hardness requirements already defined.

  3. Color and artwork files: Color references, logos, graphics and intended placement.

  4. Intended use: How the product will be used, the associated components and any stated operating conditions.

  5. Quantity requirements: Expected order quantities and any planned product or color variations.

  6. Assembly details: Components to be included, how they relate to the molded parts and what needs to be assembled.

  7. Packaging requirements: Packing format, grouped items, branding and presentation requirements.

  8. Documentation needs: Target market and any required product documentation or validation.

  9. Project timing: Your target schedule and the design or approval decisions that remain outstanding.

Where documents or samples differ, identify which information should take priority. If a requirement is undecided, label it as an open item so it can be addressed during review.

OEM Manufacturing FAQs

Can you review a project if some specifications are still undecided?

Yes. Haotian can review the available design information and discuss the details that remain open. Identify which requirements are fixed and which need development support. If the product still requires substantial design, modeling or concept development, the scope may be better suited to ODM support.

Does an approved product concept mean it is ready for tooling?

Not necessarily. Internal concept approval confirms a product direction, but manufacturing preparation may still require decisions about structure, dimensions, material requirements, color construction or component fit. Those details should be resolved sufficiently to define the tooling direction.

How are proposed design changes handled before tooling?

Our design and structural optimization support allows changes to be evaluated before a mold is made. A proposed adjustment should be considered against the customer’s intended appearance, function and assembly requirements. The resulting design direction needs to be confirmed before it becomes the basis for tooling.

Can the same decoration method be used on every material or product shape?

A method suitable for one product should not be assumed to suit another. Material choice, surface geometry, artwork detail and placement need to be evaluated together. Some visual features may be better addressed through molded detail or transferred artwork rather than a separate printing operation.

What should be reviewed when a design changes for a repeat order?

Identify the revised requirements and how they differ from the previous product. Changes to geometry, colors, artwork or components may affect tooling, decoration, assembly or packaging. Haotian’s mold workshop supports discussion of the modifications and maintenance needed for continued production.

What information is needed to assess pricing and project timing?

The review needs the product design, expected quantity, customization requirements and the scope of tooling, sampling, decoration, assembly and packaging. Unresolved design details and required revisions also need to be considered. Pricing and timing must be assessed for the specific project.
